This coming Tuesday from 8-9:30 p.m., the UWRF softball team will be volunteering for the Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) non-profit organization in Eagan, Minn.
FMSC is an organization committed to feeding children. The approach is simple: children and adults hand-pack meals specifically formulated for malnourished children, and ship the meals to nearly 70 countries around the world.
At a meeting this past October, the team decided that they would like to volunteer more often in the community and one of the team's ideas was to volunteer at FMSC.
While there, the team will be split up into different stations where different parts of the food packing process will take place. They will try to pack food as fast as they can, without spilling, to maximize the amount of food that they pack.
Haley Selkirk (Northfield, MN, Northfield), an outfielder for the Falcons says, “This is my first time doing this. The thing I'm looking forward to the most is just being to help out people who need it. We're only giving a small amount of our time away to make meals that will last families for months. It's nice to know that you can make a difference, even if it's a small one.”
Twenty Falcons will be volunteering at FMSC, including the two assistant coaches. Although it would have been ideal for the entire team to participate, “It's surprisingly hard to find a time when everyone can go,” adds Selkirk. The team is grateful that only a few student-athletes are unable to attend.
