The Falcon softball team stayed unbeated with a 2-0 win over Coe College at the NCAA Tournament in Pella, Iowa on Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Falcons play Luther College at 4 p.m., in a winner's bracket game today. Both teams are undefeated in tourney play. Friday the Falcons beat Central, 6-0. Luther advanced with an 8-1 win over St. Scholastica on Friday and a 2-0 win over St. Thomas earlier today. Luther enters today's contest with a 38-6 record.
The Falcons are now 32-13 overall. The 32 wins ties a school record for wins in a season.
River Falls 2, Coe 0
This was a pitchers' dual with River Falls'
Rose Tusa and Coe's Ashlee Simon both throwing great games. Tusa won the dual by hurling a three-hitter -she also allowed just three hits in the team's 6-0 win over Central on Friday. Tusa is now 25-6. She allowed just one extra base hit - a double in the sixth. She struck out seven and did not walk a batter. Tusa now has 235 strike outs this year which sets a school record. She broke her own record, 231 strike outs, set last year. The shutout was Tusa's eighth of the season which is also a school record.
The Falcons managed four hits against Simon. UWRF scored both ot its runs in the third
Lily Buckley led off the inning with a single to right and she went to second on a wild pitch. After an out
Hayley Buchanan reached on an infield hit and Buckley went to third on the play. Buchanan went to second when
Amanda Ryder popped up for the second out of the frame.
Abbie Morris then came through with a single to left and that scored Buckley and Buchanan.
Coe got a runner as far as second in the third with a Falcon error and a sacrifice. But Tusa got the third out on a pop up to the infield. The lead off batter in the fifth inning singled to center and a pinch runner was sacrificed to second. But Tusa struck out the next two Coe hitters. With one out in the sixth, Coe's Brianna Hull doubled to right center and the next batter reached on an infield single to put runners on first and second. The next batter hit into a force out with the runner on second forced out at third. The next batter also hit into a fielder's choice to end the threat. Tusa struck out two batter in the seventh to secure the win.
