Five members of the Falcon softball team have been named to NFCA All-Great Lakes Region teams.
Pitcher
Rose Tusa, second baseman
Hayley Buchanan and outfielder
Amanda Ryder all were named to the first team. First baseman
Ashley Goettl was named to the second team and catcher
Patty Olson was named to the third team.
Tusa, who earlier was named the WIAC Pitcher of the Year and to the first All-WIAC team, finished the season with a 27-8 record. The 27 wins is a school record for victories in a season. She also set season records for appearances (45), games started (38), strikeouts (245) and innings pitched (242). Tusa, who was named the 2011 WIAC Pitcher of the Year, finished this year with a 1.42 ERA. She was named to the 2011 and 2012 NCAA Regional All-Tournament teams and she was named to the first All-WIAC teams in 2010 and 2011 and earned honorable mention in 2009.
Buchanan, who was named to the 2012 All-WIAC first and to the 2012 NCAA Regional All-Tournament teams, hit .378 going 62-164 at the plate. The lead off hitter had a team-best 62 hits and 39 runs scored. She set a season record in games played (49) and at bats (164). Buchanan hit three homers and had 19 RBI. She had a great season in the field finishing the year with just one error in 186 chances. She had a .995 fielding percentage. In 2010 and 2011 she earned honorable mention to the All-WIAC teams.
Ryder, who was named to this year's first All-WIAC and NCAA Regional All-Tournament teams, led the Falcons in hitting with a .431 average. She scored 13 runs, had seven doubles, three home runs and 17 RBI. Ryder struck out just eight times in 110 plate appearances. She was 44-102 at the plate. In 2011 she was named to the first All-Great Lakes Region and All-WIAC teams.
Goettl, who was named to this year's first All-WIAC and NCAA Regional All-Tournament teams, hit .387 going 60-155 at the plate. She led UWRF with 12 homers, 48 RBI and a .697 slugging percentage. Goettl finished with one triple and 10 doubles. The 12 homers ties the Falcon single season record. She set a Falcon record for games played (49).
Olson, who was named to the 2012 and 2010 All-WIAC teams, hit .344 going 43-125 at the plate. She scored 20 runs, had five doubles, six homers and 29 RBI. She was second on the team in homers and RBI. Olson had a great year behind the plate making just three errors in 277 chances. She finished with a .989 fielding percentage.
This is the first time ever the Falcons have had five players named to All-Great Lakes Region teams. In 2008 four Falcons were named to All-Region teams.
The 2012 Falcons set a school record with 34 wins and won their second straight WIAC Tournament Championship. The Falcons competed in a NCAA Regional for the second straight year and finished one win away from qualifying for the NCAA Championship series.
The NFCA All-Great Lakes Region Team included individuals representing the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, Midwest Conference, Northern Athletics Conference, St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and University Athletic Association.
