The Falcon women's basketball team opened up regular season play with a tournament at the College of St. Benedict. They drew No. 23 St. Mary's University as their first opponent of the tournament and put up a fight losing 72-62.
The first half did not start off too incredibly well for the Falcons. At the half, they trailed St. Mary's by 19 points. The Falcons battled in the second half to outscore their ranked opponent by nine to trim the final margin to only ten points with St. Mary's winning 72-62.
Three Falcons went into double-digits on the game with Kate Theisen leading the way with 14 points. Katie Messman and Richell Mehus put in 13 and 10 points respectively. Taylor Karge and Hannah Pignato contributed seven points in the defeat.
Seven was the lucky number for the rebound leaders for UWRF. The Falcons as a team cleaned the glass, out rebounding victorious St. Mary's by a 39-33 margin. Theisen, Mehus and Karge were the game's leading rebounders each grabbing seven a piece.
Shelby Auseth lead the scoring charge with 18 for St. Mary's. Emma Schafer came off the bench to contribute 13 points for the victors. Molly O'Toole and Bridgett Pethke both put in 10.
The Falcons have a quick turnaround playing in the opening tournament. The Falcons will face the College of St. Benedict tomorrow (Sunday) at 3 p.m.
