Rau's Career High Leads Falcons to Home Opener Victory

River Falls, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – Junior Hayley Rau scored a career-high 16 points for the UW-River Falls women's basketball team, as the Falcons were able to take care of Viterbo in the last home opener at Karges Center 71-34.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The Falcons scored their first nine points off three point shots. One each from Brynn Liljander, Katie Messman, and Taylor Paulsrud. The Falcons would lead by seven early in the first quarter.
  • UWRF would dominate the first quarter, allowing just six points in the frame and scoring 20 to take a 14 point lead into the second quarter.
  • The dominating performance continued in the second quarter. The Falcons would extend their lead with 35 seconds to go in the quarter to 25 points. The score was 35-10 at halftime.
  • At the half, Taylor Karge had scored 10 points and Paulsrud scored eight to help the Falcons shoot 14-28 (50 percent) from the floor in the first half.
  • In the second half, it was the Hayley Rau show. She would score nine straight points in the third quarter alone, and would help the Falcons extend their lead to as much as 35 points.
  • In the fourth quarter it was the Falcons bench who scored all 14 points. Rau scored five for UWRF in the frame.
  • Young players got action in the fourth quarter, Tessa Hubbard scored four points, Karlea Kyllo scored her first three points as a Falcon. Madelyn O'Brien would also score her first two points of the season on a hook shot in the paint.
  • On the night the Falcons had shot 28-63 (44.4 percent) from the floor. UWRF also connected on six threes on 18 attempts.
  • In the paint the Falcons dominated with 36 points to the V-Hawks 14. The Falcons led the entire 40 minutes of action, and scored 15 points off 22 V-Hawk turnovers.
 
IN-DEPTH LOOK
  • Rau was the leader in points with her huge second half. She scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half. The 16 points eclipses her previous career-high of 10 points scored against Luther College in 2014.
  • The leading scorer of the Falcon starters was Karge with 14 points. She was 7-13 from the floor on the night.
  • Katie Messman added nine points with six of them coming on three point buckets.
  • The rest of the Falcon starters finished with a combined 15 points. Paulsrud finished with eight, Kate Theisen had four, and Liljander with three.

THE OPPOSITION
  • For the visiting V-Hawks, Arissa Geiser finished with 11 points on the night on 5-11 shooting.
  • Alyssa Nilssen and Riley Budde each scored six for Viterbo.
  • Viterbo did most of their damage in the third quarter with 17 of their 34 points coming in that quarter. The V-Hawks starters scored all but six of their 34 points.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
River Falls will now head on the road for their next two games. With a December 6th matchup with Northland College with a 7 p.m. tip off. Luther will also play host to UWRF on December 10th in Decorah, Iowa at 2 p.m.
