Falcons Drop Second Straight Game to Auggies

Minneapolis, Minn. (uwrfsports.com) – On the road, the UW-River Falls women's basketball team connected on eight three pointers for their second straight game but in the end were defeated by Augsburg College 76-68.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The Falcons turned the ball over 20 times in the game and cut a talented Auggie lead numerous times before ultimately falling by eight points.
  • UW-River Falls started the game playing lockdown defense. The Falcons allowed just two points in the first four and a half minutes of the game.
  • Katie Messman and Taylor Paulsrud were firing from downtown. They combined for back-to-back three pointers midway through the first and had the Falcons up 12-6.
  • Augsburg connected on back-to-back threes to close the Falcon lead 14-12 with 3:30 to go in the first.
  • At the end of the first UWRF held a slight lead 17-16.
  • Kate Theisen was the leader for UWRF through the first half. She helped UWRF hold a lead early in the second quarter and registered nine points and six rebounds.
  • Hannah Pignato also shot well in the first half. She was 3-3 from the floor capped off by a nice layup in the second quarter, she also had three assists.
  • Augsburg kept pace with UWRF. After a made free throw, Augsburg would secure an offensive rebound and connect on a three to make the score 31-27 with 2:40 to go in the half.
  • At the end of the half, the Falcons held a two point lead and shot 12-29 (41.4 percent) from the floor and had four three pointes. Theisen led all scorers with nine points.
  • In the third quarter it was the Auggies who took control. They scored nine of the first 12 points to take a six point lead.
  • The Auggies led by as much as 10 points during the quarter. Theisen and Mikeala Wilson led the Falcons offense in the quarter. Heading into the fourth the Falcons trailed the Auggies 56-48.
  • The Falcons battled back early on. The Falcons stormed back and traileby just one point with 7:21 to go after a Crystal Pearson layup.
  • Augsburg took back control and led by five points before Paulsrud dropped a triple to give the Falcons life.
  • On the following possession, Wilson soare into the paint and grabed an offensive rebound and headed to the free throw line. She sank one, missed the next but Paulsrud grabbed the offensive board and sank two free throws to give UWRF the lead with 5:37 to go.
  • The two teams would keep it close until with a two point lead, the Auggies would force a Falcon turnover and go up by four with two minutes to go.
  • Down the stretch the Auggies would make their free throws and hold off the Falcons for 76-68 victory.
 
IN-DEPTH LOOK
  • Paulsrud would have her best game as a Falcon in the loss. Her 15 points is her season-high.
  • Theisen would finish with 12 points after her strong start. She finished with eight rebounds as well.
  • Hannah Pignato had a strong offensive performance. She finished 5-6 from the floor with 12 points. She dished out five assists and had four rebounds.
  • The Falcons as a team shot 22-49 (44.9 percent) from the field.
  • Mikaela Wilson scored a season-high eight points off the bench.

THE OPPOSITION
  • Tamira McLemore scored a game-high 18 points for the Auggies. She was 9-10 from the free throw line.
  • The Auggies were 25-35 (71.4 percent) from the free throw line in the win. From the floor they shot 22-55 (40 percent) as a team.
  • Augsburg also had two other scorers in double-figures. K'Aezha Wubben (17) and Abby Jordan (12) were the others.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
UW-River Falls will return home for their final game of 2016. The Falcons will take on the undefeated Gusties of Gustavus Adolphus College (10-0, 4-0 MIAC) on December 29th at 7 p.m.
