Women's Basketball Falls in NCAA 2nd Round

RIVER FALLS, Wis. - (uwrfsports.com) - The UW-River Falls women's basketball team has season ended with a 67-46 loss to St. Thomas in the second round of the NCAA division three national tournament.

The number 13 Falcons took on the eighth ranked Tommies and could not make a comeback after being outscored 26-7 in the third quarter. The Falcons graduate one senior in Richell Mehus who has been a three year captain for the team.

In the first quarter, UWRF went up early 9-4 with a couple quick buckets from sophomore forward Taylor Karge. After going down 2-0, the Falcons came back and lead the remainder of the first quarter and lead 16-13 after on the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Falcons took their largest lead of the game scoring seven of the first 11 points in the second quarter to go up 23-17 with 5:32 to go. The Tommies ended the quarter on a 10-0 run with back-to-back three pointers to take a 27-23 lead at the halftime buzzer. In the first half, the Falcons shot 10-30 (33.3 percent) and 2-5 (40 percent) from beyond the arc. Kate Theisen led the Falcons with seven points and five rebounds.

The third quarter started with an and-one by Kaitlyn Langer and the Tommies proceeded with a 14-1 run and took a 17 points lead with 4:39 to go in the third quarter. UWRF by the end of the third quarter were down 53-30.

In the final period, the Falcons were unable to make any magic happen, and fell to the Tommies by a final score of 67-46.
From the floor, UW-River Falls shot 19-52 (36.5 percent) and 4-12 (33.3 percent) from the three point line. The Falcons turned the ball over 14 times in the game that led to 16 points for St. Thomas.

In her final game, Mehus scored nine points on 3-8 shooting and collected nine rebounds and an assist. Theisen scored nine points and had six rebounds on the night. Karge put in nine points as well for UWRF on 4-8 shooting. Brynn Liljander scored five points and had five rebounds. Mikaela Wilson off the bench had five points.

The Falcons finish their postseason run at home where the Falcons finish 13-3 this season and end up with 23 wins, the most wins since 1989. Cindy Holbrook was named Coach of the Year in WIAC and the Falcons had four players named all-WIAC including Mehus, Liljander, Karge, and Theisen. The Falcons will return four starters to their team next season.
