Women's Basketball Sends Karges Center out with a Win

River Falls, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – In the final regular season game at Karges Center, the UW-River Falls women's basketball team took down visiting UW-Platteville 81-60. Taylor Karge led the Falcons offensively with 22 points, which put her above the 1000 point threshold in her career.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Karge scored the first six points for UW-River Falls, which led to 46 first half points. UWRF led by 31 points by the fourth quarter, and cruised to the victory.
  • The Falcons roared out to a 13-3 lead in the first four minutes, with UWRF starting out 4-6 from the floor.
  • UW-River Falls scored a season-high 28 points in the first quarter, Karge scored 10 of those points. UWRF led 28-15 after the first quarter.
  • The Pioneers cut the 13 point lead to just three with 5:10 to go in the second quarter. The 9-0 run was fueled by seven free throws.
  • The Falcons surged back into the lead with an 8-0 run to end the first half, senior Hannah Pignato scored five of those points.
  • Runs were a theme for the Falcons on senor night, to start the third quarter UWRF used a 10-2 run to bring the lead to 21, the largest at that point.
  • Ten straight points ended the third quarter with four different Falcons scoring during the run.
  • The 10-0 run turned into 13-0 to start the fourth quarter with Katie Messman connecting on her third three of the afternoon, bringing the lead to 31, the largest in the game.
  • During the fourth quarter, Karge also eclipsed the 100 block plateau with her third block of the game, bringing her total to 100, good enough for third all-time at UWRF, and 14 away from the all-time record held by Megan Lindman.
  • UWRF coasted to the win by scoring 15 points and much of the Falcon bench getting time at the end of the game.
 
IN-DEPTH LOOK
  • Karge finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds, her third double-double this season, and second in the last three games.
  • Pignato scored 14 points off the bench on 5-9 shooting. She added three assists and three rebounds.
  • Messman did most of her work from beyond the arc scoring 11 points on the night, nine came via three pointers. She also had a pair of assists and five rebounds.
  • Taylor Paulsrud was the final Falcon in double-figures with 10 points on 3-7 shooting.
  • As a team, UWRF was 27-65 (41.5 percent) and shot 6-18 (33.3 percent) from beyond the arc. UWRF was efficient at the line going 21-25 (84 percent).  
  • Despite the Pioneers starting two players over 6-foot tall, the Falcons dominated the paint scoring 36 points to the Pioneers 14. UWRF also held a large advantage on the glass having 62 rebounds to the Pioneers 33.    

THE OPPOSITION
  • Lexis Macomber had 13 points to lead UW-Platteville, she was 7-9 from the free throw line and had six rebounds.
  • Blaire Lutes scored nine of her 10 points from beyond the arc, and also had two rebounds for the visiting Pioneers.
  • UW-Platteville struggled from the floor for most of the game, shooting 16-68 (23.5 percent) from the floor. The Pioneers shot 20-28 (71.4 percent) from the charity stripe, and had eight three pointers.    
 
LOOKING AHEAD
The sixth seeded Falcons will travel to UW-Stevens Point (17-8, 9-5 WIAC) to take on the third seeded Pointers on February 22 at Berg Gym with the game start set for 7 p.m. UW-Stevens Point swept the season series against the Falcons in the regular season.
