Volleyball Picks Up Two Shutout Wins

ST PAUL, Minn. (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls volleyball team pulled off two 3-0 shutout wins Saturday against Finlandia and Martin Luther.

The Falcons dominated in set one of the Finlandia match beating the Lions 25-9.  They hit an impressive .433 on 15 kills in 30 attempts.  The Lions answered in set two leading early but the Falcons came back with a 10 point run that gave them a lead for the remainder of the set.  In set two, the Lions again got out to an early lead scoring four runs before Dakotah Poitra would come up big with a kill that would set up a four point run for the Falcons.  The two teams would battle back and forth for points till the end of the set.  The Falcons looked like they were going to finish it off 25-19 but they couldn't finish it off on match point.  Two attach errors by the Falcons and a service ace would make it look like the Lions could pull off a set win but Sara Kelly came up with a kill that would shut the door on the Lions and give the Falcons the three set shutout.

Karli Nielsen was the leading offensive player for the Falcons with 12 kills.  Dakotah Poitra posted a double double having 10 kills and 14 digs. Hannah Robb was the leading defensive player with 16 digs.  Hailey Huseth lead the game with 24 assists.

In match two, the Falcons easily won the match 3-0 (25-11, 25-6, and 25-18).  Eleven points was all the Falcons would allow the Knights to score in the first set.  In set two, the Knights got five points on the board and the Falcons followed with a 10 point run that would give them a 25-6 win.  Set three was more of a challenge for the Falcons as they fell behind for the first time in the match.  A six point run would give the lead back to UWRF and then three kills by Anna Elfstrm, Joelie Schreiber, and Dakotah Poitra would give the Falcons the win.

Karli Nielsen would again lead the way offensively with 14 kills.  Hannah Striggow would follow behind with 12 kills.  Striggow would complete a double double with 15 digs.  Hannah Robb joined Striggow with 15 digs herself.  Nielsen would add 4 blocks to her day.  Overall the Falcons outhit the Knights .469 to -.024.

The Falcons tie their record up 12-12 with the two weekend wins.  They will get back to WIAC play this week as they host UW-Stout Wednesday Oct 10 at 7 p.m.  The match will be the Falcons yearly Dig for the Cure game.
