RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - UW-River Falls used a 27-point fourth quarter and strong shooting on three pointers and free throws in the second half to outscore St. Olaf by 17 points in the third and fourth quarters to take a tight 67-61 victory in the first game of the UWRF Tournament. Freshman point guard
Jenna Zeman had all 18 of her points in the second half by shooting 7-8 from the free throw line and 3-5 from beyond the arc.
The Falcons trailed by three points entering the fourth quarter, but a transition three pointer from
Anna Rollag tied the game at 43-43 after the Falcons trailed by as much as 31-16 in the closing minutes of the first half. The 27-12 run was followed by Zeman going on a tear in the fourth quarter. She drove into the paint to make it 47-45 and hit back-to-back three pointers to take a two-point lead with 2:37 remaining. Britta Koenen responded with her own three pointer on the next possession, but even Koenen's 21 points on 8-12 shooting wouldn't be enough to hold onto the lead. Zeman and
Taylor Paulsrud each went 2-2 at the line before Paulsrud drained a clutch shot from three with 43 seconds remaining to go up 63-57. A lengthy final minute full of fouls and free throws eventually led to a six-point victory for the Falcons to move them to 3-1 on the season.
Four of the five starters for St. Olaf fouled out in the fourth quarter, with those four starters accounting for 40 of the team's points. Ella Skrien was in double figures with 11 points and 5 rebounds, while Makenna Ash finished with 15 rebounds in 26 minutes. Keegan Mulvihill had a strong all-around game with 10 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals for the Lions. St. Olaf struggled at the line, finishing 10-21 and missing three free throws in the closing minute.
UWRF was led by Zeman and Paulsrud's 18 points apiece, and
Lori Wardynski added 13 points.
Brianna Leahy also had 8 points and 7 rebounds off the bench. The Falcons' bench outscored the Lions 16-11, and UWRF knocked down eight shots from beyond the arc. Zeman also led the team with 8 rebounds.
The Falcons will play their second game in the UWRF tournament when they host St. Kate's at 3 p.m. tomorrow. The Wildcats lost to UW-Stout 58-54 on Friday night in the game that preceded UWRF vs. St. Olaf. UW-Stout and St. Olaf will tip off before the Falcons and Wildcats at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
