Women's Hockey Falls at UW-Eau Claire

Eau Claire, Wis.  (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls women's hockey traveled to take on conference rival UW-Eau Claire in the final game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons outshot the Blugolds, but could not find the back of the net as UW-Eau Claire shut out the Falcons and won 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST UW-EAU CLAIRE
  • The first period saw end to end action from both teams. The Falcons were able to generate shots on net and keep offensive pressure on the Blugolds.
  • The Blugolds broke the scoreless tie late in the period when Jen Thomsen beat Angie Hall to put the Blugolds up 1-0 at the 17:28 mark of the period.
  • The Falcons began the second period with an offensive push but were unable to tie the game at 1.
  • The Blugolds added to their lead at the 8:42 mark of the period when Sami Meister beat Angie Hall to put the Blugolds up 2-0.
  • The Falcons continued to battle and fire shots at the Blugold net throughout the rest of the period, but the second period ended with the Falcons still down 2-0.
  • The Falcons owned the play early in the third, generating shots on goal and keeping possession of the puck in the offensive end.
  • The pressure paid off for the Falcons when the Blugolds were called for checking just over the 9- minute mark of the period. The Falcons were able to get a couple of shots on net during the power play but were unable to cut into the Blugold lead.
  • Kora Torkelson was called for checking at the 14:32 mark of the period. The Blugolds would capitalize late in their power play to take a 3-0 lead and put the game out of reach.
  • Freshman Callie Hoff led the Falcons with 5 shots on goal and Angie Hall made 20 saves in net.
 
THE OPPOSITION
  • Erin Connolly finished with 24 saves to record the shutout for the Blugolds.
  • Courtney Wittig, Sami Meister and Jen Thomsen scored goals for UW-Eau Claire.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
The UW-River Falls women's hockey team hosts a semi-final series in the WIAC tournament against UW-Stevens Point next week end. The puck drops at Hunt Arena on Friday night at 7:05pm.
