RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - A 30-point game from Stevens Point's Bailee Collins was too much for the Falcons to overcome in a 67-62 loss to the Pointers on Saturday afternoon. For the second straight game the Falcons were unable to convert a halftime lead into a WIAC victory, leading by 10 points at halftime before being outscored 25-14 in the third quarter.
Taylor Paulsrud led UW-River Falls with 16 points and went 9-10 on free throws, combining to go 19-20 on free throws in her two WIAC games this season. She also filled up the stat sheet with three rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
UWRF took their first lead of the game at 7-6 after a three-pointer from
Crystal Pearson and built up a six-point lead after a layup from
Brianna Koop with four minutes left in the first quarter. Collins scored six straight points to tie the game back up at 13, and Koop scored again before both teams were held scoreless the final two minutes of the quarter. Collins put Stevens Point back ahead 19-17 four minutes into the second quarter, but the Falcons used a surge on offense to finish the half on a 16-4 run to go into the break leading 33-23. The Pointers were held to only 3-15 shooting in the second quarter.
The Falcons held the lead for most of the third quarter, and a layup from
Lori Wardynski after a steal put them ahead by 10 points with four minutes left in the quarter. However, the Pointers capped off a 12-0 run over the next two minutes with a three-pointer from Amber Baehmen to suddenly go up 44-42. The game remained close until the Falcons found themselves trailing by five points with only three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but a three-pointer from Paulsrud and a layup from
Jenna Zeman helped tie the game at 59-59. The Pointers stepped up their defense in the closing minutes and knocked down their free throws, while the Falcons didn't score for the rest of the game until Pearson made a three-pointer in the closing seconds.
Collins finished as the game's leading scorer with 30 points on 7-10 shooting and 16-22 from the free throw line. Baehmen also had 16 points and 14 rebounds, while the Pointers were outscored 15-1 on bench points. Zeman also had a strong game for the Falcons by scoring 15 points and recording five steals. UWRF is now 6-7 overall and 0-2 in conference, and they will return for a home game for the first time since November when they host UW-Platteville on Wednesday.
