RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - The Falcons ended an eight-game losing streak with their second win of the season over UW-Platteville, this time on the road in a 73-71 win in overtime.
Tessa Hubbard hit a 3-pointer with less than 10 seconds left to lift the Falcons to their first overtime win of the season.
Taylor Paulsrud finished with a career-high 23 points and made six 3-pointers, while
Jenna Zeman added 18 points and a career-high nine rebounds. The pair each played more than 43 minutes in the game.
UW-River Falls started the game up 4-0 in the first minute after baskets from
Lori Wardynski and
Brianna Leahy. The Falcons were held scoreless for the rest of the first quarter and found themselves down 14-4 as the second quarter began. Paulsrud ended the 14-0 run with a 3-pointer to begin the quarter, and the Falcons had a much better offensive production than their start to finish with 17 points in the quarter.
They trailed by 12 points to start the half but quickly went on a 9-0 run to begin the third quarter to make it 33-30. UWRF brought the game back within three points in the final seconds of the quarter at 42-39 after 3-pointers from Paulsrud, Zeman and Hubbard. Kassie Buchholz made a jumper to begin the fourth quarter to make it a seven-point lead for the Pioneers, but the Falcons made five out of six free throws before Zeman finished at the rim to finally tie the game back up at 46-46 with seven minutes remaining.
The teams remained close until Zeman made a free throw to go up 59-54 with 33 seconds remaining. Zeman missed the second free throw and Maiah Domask made a fastbreak layup to cut the lead to three, and the Pioneers stole the ball back before Domask was fouled by
Crystal Pearson with 20 seconds left. Domask made the first free throw before missing the second, and Morgan Horstman finished a second-chance opportunity to tie the game with eight seconds remaining. Wardynski missed a jumper as time expired to send the game to overtime.
The Falcons fell behind by four in the opening two minutes of overtime, but Zeman and Pearson made back-to-back shots to tie the game at 65-65. Horstman put UW-Platteville back ahead at 69-68 with 24 seconds remaining, and Zeman retook the lead at 70-69 with 17 seconds remaining. Kaite Asche scored only a few seconds later to go back up 71-70, but Hubbard knocked down her 3-pointer with less than 10 seconds remaining to give the Falcons the upset on the road.
UWRF won their second WIAC game of the season and are now 8-15 overall. They will next host UW-Eau Claire at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
