Ending the regular season on the road, the UW-River Falls Falcons nearly led wire-to-wire in a 78 - 68 victory over UW-Stevens Point.
The Pointers jumped out to a 4 - 0 lead and held the Falcons scoreless for nearly two minutes, but UW-RF locked it down for the rest of the quarter holding UW-SP to nine points. The scoring began with a layup by Jenna Zeman, then Macy Nilsen hit two free throws, the first of her eventual 23 points on the night. The dominating quarter would then end with a three-pointer by Sydney Hein just before the horn off an assist from Katelyn Karch to make it 22-9.
The next quarter looked to be much of the same as the Falcons' lead grew to as much as 22 points, but then a couple of fouls would become an overall trend throughout the period where the Pointers had multiple opportunities to shoot from the free throw line. In fact, the Pointers were able to hold the Falcons scoreless for nearly 5 minutes until Karch hit a free throw just before halftime, giving UW-RF a 39-28 lead at the break.
To start the third quarter, the Pointers scored the first four points as Josie Nies and Kellan Schmidt both found the bottom of the net, but the Falcons continued to maintain their lead throughout the quarter. The Falcons hit back-to-back threes as Cassie Heinrichs and Colie Justice connected from long range, and the Falcons continued to strengthen their lead. The Pointers continued to chip away and cut into the lead, but the Falcons were able to go on a small 8-4 run in the last two minutes to reestablish their grip on the game.
UW-SP wouldn't go away quietly in the fourth quarter, getting the lead all the way down to five with 1:27 left to go in the game. After a timeout to draw up a play, Nilsen hit a tough mid-range jumper with 36 seconds remaining to extend the lead. After securing a defensive rebound, Bethany Vasecka hit some free throws to ice it and the Falcons picked up their first WIAC road victory since 2019 by a score of 78-68.
Nilsen led all scorers with a career-high 23 points on 9-of-11 shooting to go along with seven rebounds. Zeman and Vasecka both added 11. As a team, the Falcons hit 26 three-pointers in two games this week, moving themselves into the top 25 in the country in three-point shooting.
The Falcons next game will be in the 1st round of the WIAC Tournament when they travel to play #1 seed in the West, UW-Oshkosh. Tipoff is set for 7pm.
