After an overtime win on Monday, the UW-River Falls Falcons found themselves in a position to win the WIAC Championship with one more victory, but things didn't go their way on Wednesday as they fell to UW-Eau Claire 3-0.
As the first period got underway, both teams found themselves in the penalty box fairly quickly, with UW-RF getting punished 15 seconds in and UW-EC getting dinged at 3:06. Neither team was able to take advantage of their player advantage however, and neither team was able to find the net, though the Falcons did outshoot the Blugolds 20-10.
In the second period, the Blugolds were able to slip one over the shoulder of freshman Jordan O'Connor to gain their first goal at 5:39. Sadly for Falcon fans, this wouldn't prove to be their last. Their next goal game at 11:35 and a third closely behind at 14:43 to give UW-EC a commanding 3-0 lead heading into the third.
The Falcons were able to register eleven shots on goal in the third period, but none of them were able to slip past the goaltender, ensuring a 3-0 win for the visitors.
With the loss, the O'Brien Cup now goes to a decisive Game 3, this one back at UW-EC. The puck is set to drop at 7pm on Friday, March 19, with the winner declared WIAC Champion.
