Falcons Men’s Soccer defeated by UW-Platteville in WIAC Tournament Semifinals

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The UW-River Falls Men's Soccer team saw its WIAC Tournament run come to an end, falling to UW-Platteville 4-0 on the road on Friday, Nov. 8.

The Falcons, who came into the tournament as the No. 3 seed, fell to the No. 2 Pioneers after defeating UW-Stout in the WIAC Tournament first round. UW-Platteville will advance to the WIAC Tournament Championship game, hosted by No. 1 seed UW-Eau Claire.

After a neck-and-neck first half, UW-Platteville managed to extend its lead with three second-half goals to tile the match in favor of the Pioneers.

In the first half, the Falcons saw an early shot attempt on a counter attack that nearly gave UWRF a one-goal lead. UW-Platteville answered with a handful of quality shot attempts, but both teams remained scoreless through the bulk of the first half.

The Pioneers saw a larger share of possession in the first half, but goalkeeper Alvaro Boned and the Falcons managed to keep UW-Platteville scoreless through the first 36 minutes. In the 37th minute, senior defender Jacob Keller scored off a goal from the left side of the box, assisted by Alester Dawson. UWRF went into halftime trailing 1-0.

The Pioneers took control of the game in the second half, scoring three goals. In the 65th minute, UW-Platteville doubled its lead with a goal by Sebastian Carranza. The junior forward fired a shot from thirty yards out that hit the crossbar and dropped into the goal.

The Pioneers tripled their lead in the 79th minute, as Danny Gutzwiller dribbled the ball into the box and managed to push a slow-rolling shot past the keeper and into the goal. UW-Platteville wasted little time extending the lead to 4-0, as a well-placed cross in the 84th minute resulted in a shot off the post that bounced back in place for Westley Hankes to score the goal on the ensuing shot. The 4-0 scoreline would hold through the final whistle, as the Falcons ultimately saw their WIAC Tournament run come to a close in the semifinals.

The Falcons were out shot 24-1 in the match. Boned recorded eight saves for the Falcons, bringing his season total to 90.

UWRF concluded the WIAC tournament with an overall season record of 8-11. Earlier today, the WIAC announced that six Falcons earned All-WIAC honors, including Landon Christensen winning Newcomer of the Year and UWRF earning Coaching Staff of the Year.
