SAINT PETER, Minn. - The UW-River Falls women's tennis team sent a group of Falcons to the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College over the weekend to compete at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships and the Midwest Invite.
The group of
Sarah Baker,
Alexis Budzinski,
Chloe Struss, and
Sarah Baker combined for seven wins, including Baker reaching the consolation finals of the Midwest Invite.
In the ITA Regionals, a trio of Falcons dropped their respective first round matchups in the singles draw, but the duo of
Sydney Wiener and
Sarah Baker won 8-7 over Kaiser/Thurness of Wartburg College in the doubles draw before falling to Grinnell in the second round.
During the Midwest Invite singles draw,
Chloe Struss was the lone Falcon to earn a first round win, defeating Christian Ekkla of Edgewood College 2-6, 6-4, 15-13 before conceding her quarterfinal round matchup to Jordan Scharf of UW-Stevens Point.
Struss, Wiener, Budzinski and Baker each participated in the Midwest Invite consolation singles draw. Wiener and Budzinski both won in the first round, but dropped their quarterfinal matches.
Sarah Baker, who opened her weekend singles competition in the Midwest Invite falling 6-4, 7-5 to Nehir Ergun of Grinnell College, bounced back in the consolation bracket with three wins to reach the finals. She defeated Madi Whalen of Central College 8-0, Hailey Beisel of UW-Eau Claire 8-0, had a walk-over win in the semifinals, and then fell 8-2 versus Jay Mascardo of Luther College in the finals.
The Falcons return to WIAC competition next Saturday, traveling to face UW-Oshkosh.
