MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The No. 1-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team defeated No. 6-ranked Plattsburgh State 3-1 Saturday afternoon in the opening game of the Panther/Cardinal Classic, advancing to tomorrow's Championship game.
The Falcons will face Endicott College tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 30 at 5 p.m. (ET).
UWRF (6-1) earned its second consecutive win over Plattsburgh State, most recently facing the Cardinals during the 2022-23 season in which they won 3-2 to advance to the Cardina/Panther Classic title game in Plattsburgh, N.Y., going on to defeat Middlebury College 3-2 in overtime.
The Falcons used goals in each period while outshooting the Cardinals 27-19 to earn the win, including
Alexis Larsen's first goal as a Falcon for the game-winner in the second period.
Sophia Hess got the scoring started in the first period, scoring her fourth of the season just under eight minutes into regulation with help from
Megan Goodreau, and UWRF led 1-0 through 20 minutes.
Early in the second, Plattsburgh State tied the game with an unassisted goal, but late in the frame the Falcons regained the lead with Larsen's first collegiate goal, assisted by
Madison Lavergne and
MaKenna Aure. UWRF carried its 2-1 lead into the third and held it for the rest of the game, adding insurance with a Goodreau power play goal late to seal the 3-1 win.
Jordan O'Kane made her seventh straight start in net and notched 18 saves to pick up the win. Aure and
Gracyn Knowles shared the team-lead with five shots on goal each.
