ROCHESTER, N.Y. — UW-River Falls sophomore Jacob Balcome concluded Day 2 of the 2025 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships making history for UWRF, claiming the national championship in the men's heptathlon.
Balcome is the first Falcon indoor national champion since 2012, and the second all-time in program history.
The sophomore from Alexandria, Minnesota finished the heptathlon with 5,304 points, setting a new program record for the event by 96 points — the previous record was set by Balcome earlier in the season.
Balcome's performance in the heptathlon marked the 12th time that a Falcon has earned individual All-America honors in indoor track, the first since David Paynotta did so in 2017.
On day two of the championships, Balcome started things off with a ninth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.57. Next up in pole vault, Balcome placed second with a height of 4.40 meters (14-5.25) to rank first with 4,546 points heading into the final event — Balcome led by a narrow margin of 29 points going into the 1,000 meters.
In the 1,000 meters, Balcome's time of 2:50.77 to finish seventh overall secured his spot atop the combined standings, winning by 143 points over the second-place finisher.
Balcome is the fourth individual men's champion in the history of both indoor and outdoor track at UW-River Falls. He is the seventh all-time champion across both the men's and women's programs.
