GENEVA, Ohio — The UW-River Falls track and field program concluded its season on day two of the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Geneva, Ohio on Saturday, May 23.
Sophomore Jacob Balcome and freshman Joe Guthrie highlighted the day, bringing home All-American honors in the men's decathlon. Balcome placed fourth overall with 6,767 points and Guthrie placed seventh with 6,476 points.
Balcome and Guthrie are the first UWRF men's outdoor All-Americans since David Paynotta did so in the 100 and 200 meters during the 2017 season. Balcome and Guthrie also became just the second and third Falcons to earn All-American honors in the men's decathlon, joining Clint Christy (2007). Balcome's fourth-place finish tied Christy for the highest ever finish by a Falcon in the event.
Jacob Balcome
- Jacob Balcome started off day two of the men's decathlon with an eighth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking in at 15.85.
- Next up in the discus, Balcome placed 12th with a mark of 34.21 meters (112-3).
- Balcome performed admirably in the pole vault, placing third with a mark of 4.40 meters (14-5.25). The score moved the sophomore into fourth place in the combined standings with two events remaining.
- In the javelin, Balcome placed fifth with a throw of 48.46 meters (159-0).
- Balcome concluded the day with a sixth-place finish in the 1,500 meters, clocking in at 4:45.28 to secure fourth place in the men's decathlon.
- The All-American finish in the decathlon comes just months after Balcome was crowned NCAA champion in the indoor heptathlon, concluding a historic season for the sophomore.
Joe Guthrie
- In the decathlon 110-meter hurdles, Joe Guthrie started off day two with a time of 16.64 to place 15th.
- Guthrie placed 10th in the discus, throwing 34.74 meters (114-0).
- In the pole vault, Guthrie placed 12th with a leap of 3.70 meters (12-1.5). Guthrie stood at 11th place in the combined standings through eight events of the decathlon.
- Guthrie moved up the standings with a strong showing in javelin, placing third with a mark of 50.53 meters (165-9).
- The final event of the day saw a strong finish for Guthrie, who placed second in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:33.25.
Yaih Marial
- Junior Yaih Marial finished 17th in the men's high jump, clearing 2.0 meters (6-6.75). Marial cleared both 1.95 meters and 2.0 meters on his third attempt, but came just one spot shy of Second-Team All-American honors.
