RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The No. 1-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team used a three-goal first period to take control early and went on to defeat UW-Superior by a score of 4-1 Saturday afternoon at Hunt Arena.
With their 15th win in a row, the Falcons' overall record improved to 19-1 and 7-1 in the WIAC, sweeping the regular season WIAC series against UW-Superior.
UWRF opened the scoring not long after the midway point of the first period when
Sami Pool netted her second goal of the season as her shot from the point made its way through traffic after a clean faceoff win from
Katherine Bell. The Falcons added two more goals late in the period from
Alexa Niccum and
Sophia Hess to build a 3-0 advantage heading into the first intermission.
River Falls extended its lead to 4-0 late in the second period with a power play goal from Alexa Niccum, marking UWRF's 15th consecutive game with a power play goal and Niccum's second goal of the game.
UW-Superior broke through midway through third period, but the Falcons' defense and goaltending held the Yellowjackets scoreless the rest of the way.
Jordan O'Kane earned the win in net for River Falls, stopping 18 shots. The Falcons outshot UW-Superior 55-19 for the game and finished 1-for-4 on the power play.
Megan Goodreau led all players with three assists, while Sophia Hess recorded a goal and two helpers.
UWRF next faces UW-Eau Claire next Saturday, Feb. 7 at Hunt Arena.
