WAUWATOSA, Wis. – The UW-River Falls men's soccer team earned its second straight shutout victory Monday evening, defeating Wisconsin Lutheran 1-0 at Warriors Soccer Field.
The Falcons improved to 3-2-1 on the season behind an early goal from
Gabriel Abad Lobo and a defensive effort that held the Warriors to just two shots on goal all night.
UWRF wasted little time against the Warriors, registering three shots within the opening five minutes. The Falcons broke through in the ninth minute when Abad Lobo found the back of the net off an assist from
Mauricio Cuevas, giving River Falls the1-0 advantage at the 8:13 mark.
The Falcons outshot Wisconsin Lutheran 7-2 while holding an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks heading into the break.
River Falls continued to create opportunities after the break.
Sorel Richardson put a shot on frame in the 49th minute before Cuevas forced another save from Wisconsin Lutheran goalkeeper Morgan Determan in the 56th.
In the 58th minute, the Falcons earned a penalty kick from Richardson, although his attempt was saved by Determan to keep the Warriors within one.
UWRF tested Wisconsin Lutheran's defense, with
Sam Everakes,
Hunter Berry and Richardson each putting shots on goal during the second half. The Falcons finished the night with a 17-10 advantage in shots, a 9-2 edge in shots on goal, while generating 11 corner kicks compared to two for the Warriors.
Jaime Mata made two saves while playing all 90 minutes in goal to secure the clean sheet. Richardson led the Falcons with five shots, including four on goal, while Abad Lobo totaled two shots and scored the match's lone goal. Cuevas recorded the assist and added a shot on goal.
The Falcons will return home on Thursday, Sept. 17, hosting Luther College at Ramer Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
