The Falcon men's hockey team dominated their home opener on Saturday night, defeating the Yellowjackets of UW- Superior by a score of 5-3.
The Falcons jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back.
Eric McLintock (Traverse City, MI, Traverse City, NAHL) scored first. Assisting the freshman forward on the first collegiate goal of his career were teammates
Andy Inderieden (Maple Grove, MN, Topeka, NAHL) and
Alec Hagaman (Peoria, IL, Topeka, NAHL). McLintlock's goal came at 5:18 in the first period in front of the rowdy 1056 fans in attendance. The Falcons went ahead, 2-0, at 7:42 in the period as another freshman forward,
Bryce Ravndalen (Warroad, MN, Waterloo, USHL), tallied the first goal of his collegiate career. Assisting Ravndalen on the goal was
Sean Roadhouse (Tulsa, OK, Texas, NAHL) and
John Bullis (Frisco, TX, Texas, NAHL).
Jesse Junkermeier of Superior was cited for an interference penalty at 12:48 of the second period. Despite the Yellowjacket's power play opportunity, the Falcons offense would not let up.
Josh Calleja (New Richmond, Wisconsin, MnJHL) scored his second goal of the season, short-handed, at 13:04 following the penalty. Bullis and
Justin Brossman (Littleton, CO, Sioux City, USHL) assisted Calleja on the goal. It was Calleja's second short-handed goal of the season. The second period would end with the Falcons leading the Yellowjackets 3-1.
Scoring the first goal of the game for UWS was Tyler Klein. Following an assist by T.J. Ahvenniemi, Klein's first goal of the season came against Falcon goaltender
Eric Babcook at 2:36.
At 8:24 in the third period, the Yellowjackets cut the Falcons lead to one goal, 3-2, as Talon Bernando scored on a shot that was set up by Junkermeier.
The game winning goal went to Calleja, as he sunk a shot at 9:06 to extend the Falcons lead 4-2. Assisting Calleja on his second goal of the game and his third of the season was Brossman.
The Falcon offensive success continued as Hagaman scored his second goal of the season at 14:17. Assisting Hagaman was McLintlock.
The Yellowjackets scored the final goal of the game at 18:00 on the stick of Bernando on a power play following a holding penalty on
Brady Horn (Yorba Linda, CA, Langley, BCHL). Assisting Bernando was Pat Dalbec and Logan Isley.
Babcook earned his second win of the season after making 23 saves throughout the game. Six the saves came in the first period, 10 in the second and seven in the third. Strandberg received the loss and also made 23 saves in the game. Both goaltenders played for the entirety of the game.
The Falcons are now 2-0 and 1-0 in NCHA play. UWRF will fight to remain undefeated as the Falcons will face off against UW- Superior again tomorrow night at Hunt Arena. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
