The Falcon men's hockey team came back from a two-goal deficit and defeated the Blugolds of UW- Eau Claire in the seconds before the expiration of the third period at Hunt Arena on Friday night.
Scoring the first goal of the game was Jordan Singer of Eau Claire at 08:58 in the first period. The goal came on a power play opportunity following a cross checking penalty on Brady Horn (Yorba Linda, CA, Langley, BCHL). The power play was the first of many in the game, as both teams tallied eight penalties totaling 16 minutes throughout the game. Assisting Singer on the first goal of the game was Andrew Wilcox.
Ben Beaudoin (Inver Grove Heights, MN, Southern Minnesota, NAHL) struck back for the Falcons at 12:39 with his fourth goal of the season despite being shorthanded after Josh Calleja (New Richmond, Wisconsin, MnJHL) was called for slashing. Assisting Beaudoin on the crucial game-tying goal was Jason Yuel (Winnipeg, MAN, Prince George, BCHL).
After Beaudoin's goal, both teams stayed off the scoreboard until late in the second period. John Bullis (Frisco, TX, Texas, NAHL) was sent to the penalty box for elbowing, and the Blugolds quickly capitalized on the man up opportunity. Eau Claire took the lead on the stick of Tyler Romasco at 18:08. Assisting Romasco on the goal was Singer and Tim Possehl.
Penalties proved to be the downfall of Eau Claire as both teams battled vigorously for the puck for the third period. Blugold's Jared Williams and Possehl were both sent to the penalty box in the last minute of the game for hooking. Yuel took advantage of the opportunity by tying the score with a goal at 19:28. The goal was Yuel's first of the season thus far, and he was assisted by Calleja.
Freshman forward Alec Hagaman (Peoria, IL, Topeka, NAHL) scored the game winning goal with only six seconds remaining on the clock. The thrilling goal in front of the 766 fans in attendance was assisted by Bullis and Eric McLintock (Traverse City, MI, Traverse City, NAHL).
Hagaman was not the only highly impressive freshman on the ice. Goaltender Scott Lewan (Westland, MI, Alberni Valley, BCHL) played in net for 59:31, only being pulled in the last 29 seconds of the game to give the Falcon's another forward on the ice. Lewan totaled 24 saves throughout the game. Scott Pederson was given the loss after playing in net for the Blugolds for the entire 60 minutes of the game. Pederson totaled 28 saves.
With the victory, the Falcon's extend their record to 3-2-1 this season. UWRF is 2-1 in conference play, and will be hosting the Blugolds again tomorrow night at Hunt Arena. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
