The Falcon men's hockey team rebounded from a 2-0 deficit at Augsburg College on Friday night to earn a 2-2 overtime tie.
Auggies Head Coach Chris Brown welcomed the Falcons to Ed Saugestad Rink for the highly anticipated match up between the two teams. Brown is a graduate of UWRF and was a captain on the 1994 Falcon NCAA National Championship team.
Augsburg got on the board first with a goal from Nick Guran at 4:11 in the first period. Assisting Guran on his first goal of the season was Joel Sauer and Jim Jensen. The goal came on UWRF goaltender Scott Lewan (Westland, MI, Alberni Valley, BCHL). The freshman had earned the first start of his collegiate career. Lewan prevented the Auggies from scoring for the remainder of the period.
Guran struck again at 10 minutes of the second period, giving the Auggies a two goal lead. Guran's second goal of the season came with assists from Sauer and David Hines.
Justin Brossman (Littleton, CO, Sioux City, USHL) responded for UWRF with a goal with just 17 second to play in the second period. Assisting Brossman on his fourth goal of the season was John Bullis (Frisco, TX, Texas, NAHL). The goal was Brossman's first since scoring a hat trick in the Falcons opening game of the season at Concordia. Bullis picked up his fourth assist of the year. Bullis has picked up one assist in each of the team's first four games. The goal was scored on Auggie goaltender Justin Lochner, who totaled 24 saves in the game.
The Falcons tied the score early in the third period. At 1:17, Ben Beaudoin (Inver Grove Heights, MN, Southern Minnesota, NAHL) scored the crucial game tying goal on Lochner with assists coming from Brossman and Josh Calleja (New Richmond, Wisconsin, MnJHL). It was Beaudoin's third goal of the season. Both Brossman and Calleja have scored at least one point in three of the team's first four games. The goal would end up being the last of the game, as both teams fought back and forth for the puck for the remainder of the period.
Both teams went scoreless in overtime. Lewan's collegiate debut at goaltender was highly impressive, as he tallied 38 saves and prevented the Auggies from scoring in overtime. Lewan proved clutch as he shut out the Auggies for the entire second half of the game. He stopped all four shots he faced in the extra five minutes of overtime.
The Auggies outshot the Falcons, 40-26 in the game. Both teams had 10 first period shots but Augsburg outshot UWRF 15-7 in the second period and 11-7 in the third. Both teams were help without a power play goal. The Falcons were 0-4 and AC was 0-5. UWRF was called for six minor penalties and the Auggies for five.
UWRF now holds a record of 2-1-1. The Falcons will stay on the road and play at Gustavus Adolphus College at 7 p.m., on Saturday.
