Women's Hockey Team Opens Season With 5-0 Win at Bethel - Video Added

UWRF's Campbell Makes 19 Saves to Earn Ninth Career Shutout

Five Falcons found the back of the net and goalie Cassi Campbell (Anchorage, AK, Toronto Rattlers) stopped all 19 shots she faced as the Falcon women's hockey team won its season opener on the road shutting out Bethel University, 5-0, Friday night.

The Royals and Falcons were tied with no score after one, but the Falcons tallied three goals in the second and two in the third to improve their all-time record against Bethel to 11-0-2.

In the second period, it was Heather Horgen (Grand Rapids, MN, Grand Rapids HS)who put the Falcons up first. She scored the first goal of the season for the Falcons and of the game at 8:02 with an assist coming from Kait Mason (Eagan, MN, Eagan HS) and Katie Flanagan (Roseville, MN, Roseville HS). Less than two minutes later Brook Story (Warroad, MN, Warroad HS) made it 2-0 Falcons with her first collegiate goal midway through the period at 9:56 with an assist from Jessica Thompson (Shoreview, MN, Mounds View HS).

Breanne Hrabe (New Prague, MN, New Prague HS) added the Falcons third goal of the period at 16:52 with assists from Jamie Briski (Chisholm, MN, Hibbing-Chisholm HS)and Katie Batters (Champlin, MN, Champlin Park HS). It was Hrabe's first goal of the season.

In the third, Mason scored her first collegiate goal, unassisted, at 5:25 to make it 4-0 Falcons. Later in the period, at 11:11, Emma Nordness (Excelsior, MN, Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) added her first goal of the season to make it 5-0 Falcons off Batter's second assist of the game.

Falcon goaltender Campbell shutout the Royals to improve to 1-0 on the season. She stopped all 19 shots she faced. It was the ninth shutout of her Falcon career.

UWRF, ranked No. 6 in the USCHO.com preseason poll, outshot Bethel 38-19 in the contest. Neither team could capitalize on the power play. UWRF failed on four attempts and Bethel failed on three. Bethel committed four penalties for eight minutes in the box and UWRF spent six minutes in the box after committing three penalties.

The 1-0 Falcons now head to Mequon, Wis., to open up their NCHA schedule against Concordia University. Action is set to get underway at 7 p.m., on Friday. The Falcons have never lost to Concordia in the eight games the two teams have played. The teams also play at 2 p.m., on Saturday.
