The UWRF men's hockey team was defeated by two goals in a highly competitive matchup on Saturday night.
The game was the second straight road game for the Falcons, as they headed to Don Roberts Ice Rink in St. Peter, MN, to face off against the always-competitive Gusties of the College of Gustavus Adolphus.
The game consisted of clean, action packed hockey as two of the most dominant forces in NCAA Division III hockey battled it out in front of the 593 fans in attendance. The Gusties strong defense was able to keep the Falcons off the board for the entirety of the game, a feat that no other team has accomplished since February 13th of last season when the Falcons were shut out by the Green Knights of St. Norbert, who also competed in the DIII National Championship game last season.
Neither team was able to score for the first two periods of the game. Freshman goaltender
Scott Lewan (Westland, MI, Alberni Valley, BCHL) had a stunning performance in net against the Gusties in the second start of his collegiate career. Lewan's first start came last night against Augsburg, where he only allowed two goals while making 38 saves throughout the game, including shutting out the Auggies in overtime. Lewan continued to impress, tallying 52 saves in the game while only allowing two goals against the relentless Gustavus offense.
Scoring the first goal of the game was Russ Ring-Jarvi at 1:33 in the third period. Ring-Jarvi's goal came on a power play opportunity following a crucial penalty on
Jason Yuel (Winnipeg, MAN, Prince George, BCHL). Assisting Ring-Jarvi on his first goal of the season was Gustav Bengtston.
Bengtston struck again in the closing minutes of the third period, scoring at 18:45 with an assist from Adam Smyth to give the Gusties the 2-0 victory.
Despite going scoreless, the Falcon offense was anything but silent.
Justin Brossman (Littleton, CO, Sioux City, USHL) led the team with six shots on goal throughout the game. The Falcons totaled 22 shots on goal against Gustie goaltender Tyler Venne, however his lights out performance prevented the skilled Falcon forwards from capitalizing on their respective offensive opportunities.
The Falcons will attempt to shake off their three game streak without a victory next weekend at Hunt Arena as they host the Blugolds of UW- Eau Claire in a two game series. The first game is set for next Friday, and the puck will drop at 7:05 p.m.
