The Falcon men's basketball team started its 2010-11 WIAC season with a 62-58 win at UW-Superior on Wednesday night.
Jake Voeltz (River Falls, River Falls HS),
Shane Manor (Altoona, UW-Superior) and
Brian Kimble (Stevenson Ranch, CA, Coll. of Canyons JC) all scored in double figures to lead the Falcons.
The game was close throughout with the biggest lead held by the Falcons of nine points.
The score was tied, 53-53, with 6:18 to go and the Falcons outscored the Jackets, 9-5, down the stretch to get the win. With the score tied, Marcus Helland hit a three to give UWS a 56-53 lead with 5:26 to play. The Falcons scored the next four points to take a 57-56 lead with 3:54 to play. Manor, who played two seasons at UWS before transfering to UWRF last year, hit a layup and Voeltz hit a jumper to give the Falcons the lead.
But UWS's Can Culy scored on a layup with 3:20 to go to put his team ahead, 58-57. But that would be the last points that UWS would score on the night.
Voeltz was fouled with 1:48 to play and he made both free throws to give the Falcons a one-point lead, 59-58. Neither team scored over the next minute plus of play. With just 18 seconds to go,
Jontae Koonkaew (Apple Valley, MN, Apple Valley HS) was fouled and he stepped cooly to the line and made both free throws to put UWRF ahead, 61-58. With time running out UWS was forced to foul again and this time Kimble went to the line and made 1-2 from the charity stripe to finish the scoring.
Voeltz finished with 16 points, Manor 14 and Kimble a season high 10.
Ollie White (Mound, MN, Mound-Westonka HS), Manor and Voeltz all had four rebounds. The Falcons were 10-14 at the line while UWS was just 2-4. UWS outrebounded the Falcons, 34-29.
The Falcons, now 5-2 overall and 1-0 in WIAC play, will host the No. 1 ranked team in the nation, UW-Stevens Point, on Saturday at the Karges Center. Action starts at 3 p.m.UWSP enters the game 4-0 overall and 1-0 in WIAC play.
