The Falcon men's basketball team overcame a 10-point first half deficit and went on to a 77-67 win over the University of Sioux Falls on Thursday night at the Karges Center.
UWRF trailed, 42-32 at the break. The Falcons shot just 30 percent (10-33) from the field and 55 percent (11-20) in the first half. Meanwhile the Cougars shot 52 percent (13-25) from the field and 90 percent (9-10) from the line in the first 20 minutes.
But the Falcons came out of the locker room in the second half and played much better on both ends of the court. With 16:05 to play the Falcons tied the game for the first time, 45-45 when
Jake Voeltz (River Falls, River Falls HS) hit a layup, was fouled, and made the free throw. UWRF never trailed after that.
The game was tied once more, with 13:33 to play. USF's Ronnell Grant hit a layup to tie the game, 51-51. The Falcons went on an 8-2 un after that to take control of the contest. The Falcons led by 6-11 points for the rest of the game.
Shane Manor (Altoona, UW-Superior) led the Falcons with 25 points finishing 8-13 from the field and 9-14 from the line. Manor's 25 points tied his season high. He scored 25 in the team's 90-69 win over Simpson on Nov. 19. Manor also led the Falcons with four assists and three blocks.
Voeltz finished with a double-double scoring 17 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. It was his second double-double of the season. He scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a 73-60 win over UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 4.
In the decisive second half the Falcons shot 16-29 (.552) from the field and 12-19 (.632) from the line. The Falcons defense cranked up its game in the second half. USF shot just 7-25 (.280) from the field.
The win snapped a five-game USF winning streak. The Cougars, now 9-5, were led by Eric Tisby who scored 20 points.
The Falcons, 11-2 overall and ranked No. 16 in the D3hoops.com poll, return to WIAC play on Wednesday when they host UW-Stout at 6 p.m., at the Karges Center. UWRF is in first place in the WIAC with a perfect 4-0 record.
