The Falcon men's hockey team defeated the Foresters of Lake Forest College by a score of 5-1 at Hunt Arena on Saturday night. The game was the second of a two game series in which the Falcons swept their opponent.
Geoff Shewmake (Chicago, IL, Bradford, GMHL) scored the first goal of the game at 05:32 in the first period to give the Falcons a lead that they would not relinquish for the entirety of the game. The goal came against Forester goaltender Marc Stuart who made 40 saves on the relentless Falcon offense last night. Assisting Shewmake was Nolan Craner (Plainwell, MI, Alpena, NAHL) and Caleb Wolfgram (White Bear Lake, MN, Topeka, NAHL).
Shewmake would strike again at 15:56 in the first period to give the Falcons a two-goal lead. All three of Shewmake's goals this season have been during this weekend series against the Foresters. Shewmake was assisted by Craner and Chris Salomone (Homer Glen, IL, Traverse City, NAHL).
Scott Lewan (Westland, MI, Alberni Valley, BCHL) was in net for the Falcons and made 12 saves in the period. The freshman earned the first shut out of his career on Friday night against Lake Forest, and his lights out goaltending performance continued throughout the second game of the series.
Josh Calleja (New Richmond, Wisconsin, MnJHL) extended the Falcon lead by three goals after sinking a shot on Stuart at 4:13 in the second period. Assisting Calleja on his fourth goal of the season was Alec Hagaman (Peoria, IL, Topeka, NAHL).
The heated matchup contained 16 penalties, over half of which were roughing calls. The most crucial roughing penalty was called against Forester Ethan Goldberg at 17:55, as the Falcons were able to capitalize on the opportunity and score the only power play goal of the night. Scoring the goal at 18:06 in the second period, his second of the season, was Andrew Harrison (Sault Ste. Marie, ONT, Fargo-Moorhead, NAHL). Harrison was assisted by Sean Roadhouse (Tulsa, OK, Texas, NAHL) and the current leader in points scored for River Falls (with 11 total), Justin Brossman (Littleton, CO, Sioux City, USHL).
Lewan totaled 15 saves in the period. Stuart recorded nine.
The Falcon offense continued to pour it on in the third period as they tallied another 18 shots on goal. Jason Yuel (Winnipeg, MAN, Prince George, BCHL) scored the final Falcon goal of the game at 11:22 with an assist from Harrison. The goal was Yuel's third of the season thus far.
Nine seconds before Lewan recorded his second consecutive shutout, Chad Thompson scored the only Forester goal of the game. Craner and Roadhouse were cited for tripping and roughing at 18:21 and 18:55 respectively, giving the Foresters a 5-3 power play opportunity for the final minute of the game. Thompson's goal ended Lewan's streak of 172 consecutive minutes in net without allowing a goal. Thompson was assisted by Ben Finney.
Lewan tallied 16 saves in the period for a total of 43 throughout the game. Stuart earned 17 saves in the third period, giving him 38 saves on the night.
With the weekend sweep of the Foresters at Hunt Arena, the Falcons extend their record to 5-5-1 this season. The Falcons will be heading on the road to face off against the Blue Devils of UW-Stout in a two-game series next weekend. River Falls has a cumulative series record of 59-17-1 against Stout, and they look to attempting to pad the lopsided numbers next Friday. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Menomonie at the Dunn County Ice Arena.
