The No. 18 ranked Falcon men's basketball team used smothering defense to rout UW-Eau Claire and become the WIAC's last undefeated team, Wednesday night at the Karges Center. The Falcons won the game 75-51.
River Falls led by just eight at the half, but outscored the Blugolds 37-21 in the second half to come away with the victory.
In the opening half, Marcus Rau was the offense horse for UWEC with 14 points. The Falcon defense stiffened in the second session allowing just 21 points. UWEC was forced into tough looks all night shooting just 21-55 (.382).
Shane Manor (Altoona, UW-Superior) had all 11 of his points in the opening half to pace River Falls.
During a seven minute stretch midway through the first half the game saw nine lead changes and three ties. The Falcons took the lead with 5:28 to go in the half and never trailed again.
Eau Claire trimmed the half-time lead to three, early in the half. Following that, UWRF went on a 15-4 run and never looked back. The 24-point ending margin was the largest lead of the evening for the Falcons.
River Falls used a balance scoring attack with nine players ending with six points or more. Manor led UWRF with 11.
Jake Voeltz (River Falls, River Falls HS) finished the night with seven points and a game-high nine rebounds.
UWRF improves to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in WIAC action. The Falcons will be in action again on Saturday when they travel to the Kolf Sports Center in Oshkosh, to take on the Titans. Tip-off is set for 4pm.
