Falcons Soccer Edges Augsburg in Close Matchup - VIDEO NOW INCLUDED

The UWRF Falcons soccer team extended their record to 3-1 after a close matchup in the rain against Augsburg College. The game, which took place at home, hosted an attendance of 105 fans despite the unpleasant weather conditions.

The Falcons totaled four shots on goal to the Auggies six in the first period. The period remained scoreless as both teams had solid performances on defense. Falcon goalkeeper Rachel Thompson (Cedar Falls, IA) made a clutch save at 22:04 against Auggie forward Courtney Barthel. Thompson's save would prove crucial to the Falcons victory.

UWRF, despite being kept scoreless in the first period, played well on offense and had several scoring opportunities. Augsburg goalkeeper Diana Bocklund made two saves in the period against Eryn Lansverk (White Bear Lake, MN) at 31:57 and Emily Stoks (Shakopee, MN) at 37:07.

The Falcons offense came into full gear during the second period. UWRF totaled 11 shots to Augsburg's 3, and Thompson made two saves in the period to earn the shut out.

Molly O'Neill (Maplewood, MN, St. Bernard's) became very close to scoring the first goal of the game at 61:28 after hitting the crossbar. O'Neill would go on to score the first and only goal of the game later in the period at 71:55. Assisting the freshman O'Neill were teammates Janae Baron (Hermantown, MN) and Alyssa Manor (Stillwater, MN). The Falcons offense would prove to be a dominant force for the remainder of the game, but the scoreboard was kept at 1-0 due to a series of impressive saves by Bocklund.

The Falcons next matchup is against the Scots of Macalester College on Sunday in River Falls. The Falcons will be attempting to break an 0-8-0 series record versus the Scots. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
