The Falcon men's hockey team was defeated by a score of 3-1 in a conference matchup against the Pointers of UW-Stevens Point on Friday night.
Starting at goaltender for the Falcons was the freshman Scott Lewan (Westland, MI, Alberni Valley, BCHL). Lewan had a highly impressive performance despite the disappointing loss in the first game of the weekend series at K.B. Willett Arena in Stevens Point. In net for the pointers was Nick Graves.
Scoring the first goal, and the lone goal of the game for the Falcons, was Andy Inderieden (Maple Grove, MN, Topeka, NAHL). Inderieden's shot sunk the shot on Graves at 12:17 in the first period. Assisting Inderieden on his fourth goal of the season was Geoff Shewmake (Chicago, IL, Bradford, GMHL) and Chris Salomone (Homer Glen, IL, Traverse City, NAHL).
The Pointers out shot the Falcons 16-9 in the first period. Lewan made all 16 saves, and Graves tallied eight.
The Pointers started off the second period with a bang, tying the score 1-1 48 seconds into the first minute. Scoring the goal was Nick Kenney, who was assisted by Max Bobrow.
Stevens Point took the lead on the stick of Garrett Suter at 3:05 in the second period. Assisting Suter on the game winning goal was teammates Kent Detlefsen and Kyle Heck. The goal came on a power play following a crucial tripping penalty called on Brady Horn (Yorba Linda, CA, Langley, BCHL).
The Pointers extended their lead to two goals at 13:54 in the second period as Kenney went on to score his second goal of the night. Eric McLintock was cited for charging, which gave Stevens Point a man up opportunity. They capitalized, and Sean McNeely was awarded the assist.
Lewan totaled 13 saves in the period while allowing the two goals, while Graves made five saves.
The Falcons rebounded from their shooting deficit in the third period. Donnie Hallmark received a five minute major for contact to the head at 1:46 in the third period, as well as a 10 minute misconduct penalty. The penalties gave the Falcons a power play opportunity that lasted for the majority of the third period; however they were unable to capitalize.
Tempers flared up with the Falcons 10th loss of the season, as Jason Yuel (Winnipeg, MAN, Prince George, BCHL), Alec Hagaman (Peoria, IL, Topeka, NAHL), and Ben Beaudoin (Inver Grove Heights, MN, Southern Minnesota, NAHL) as well as Pointers Chad Boeckman, Suter and Heck were all involved in a brief skirmish at the conclusion of the game.
Lewan tallied only four saves in the period for a total of 33 on the game as the Falcons minimized the Pointers shooting chances with their long power play. Graves tallied eight saves in the period for a cumulative game total of 21.
The Falcons drop to 7-10-1 on the season with the loss, going 3-8-0 in NCHA conference play. UW- Stevens Point is now 8-10-0 this season, going 4-7-0 in conference match ups. The two teams will be facing off again tomorrow night at K.B. Willett Arena, with the opening puck set to drop at 7 p.m.
