The Falcon men's basketball team stayed on a roll wining its 12th straight game with an 87-73 WIAC win at UW-Stout on Saturday afternoon.
The Falcons, ranked No. 11 in this week's D3hoops.com poll, remain perfect in WIAC play with a 9-0 record as the team started the second half of the conference schedule. UWRF improved to 6-2 in road games with the win.
The Falcons had 47-38 lead at the half thanks in part to 60 percent shooting from the field. UWRF was 21-35 from the field including 4-7 from three-point range. UT Udo (Apple Valley, MN, U. of Mary) led the Falcons with 10 points and Aaron Anderson (Stillwater, MN, Stillwater HS) had seven. Anderson was 3-3 from the field including 1-1 from behind the arc. Shane Manor (Altoona, UW-Superior) and Danny Johnson (Stillwater, MN, Stillwater HS) each scored six points. Johnson was 2-2 from three-point range.
The first half was close until the Falcons went on a run halfway through the first 20 minutes. With the score tied, 27-27, with 8:33 to play, the Falcons went on a 15-5 run to take a 43-33 lead with 2:02 to go. UWRF had two 11 point leads, the last coming with 1:29 to play when Anderson hit a jumper.
The closest Stout could get in the second half was seven points, 60-53, with 12:33 go to. Before that the Falcons had two 13-point leads, the last coming with 16:55 to play when Anderson hit two free throws to make it a 56-43 game. After UWS climbed to within seven, the Falcons went on a 10-2 run to take a 70-55 lead with 9:45 to go. The Falcons led by 17, 87-70, with 2:03 to play when Jontae Koonkaew (Apple Valley, MN, Apple Valley HS) hit his fourth three-pointer.
Five Falcons scored in double figures in the win. Jake Voeltz (River Falls, River Falls HS) scored 15 points and led both teams with 11 rebounds. It was the senior's fifth double-double this year and his third in the last four games. He also had three assists and led UWRF with four steals.
Anderson and Koonkaew each scored 14 points. Koonkaew finished a perfect 4-4 from behind the arc. Manor finished with 12 points and he tied his season high with nine rebounds. Manor also had three assists. Udo didn't score in the second half and finished with 10 points.
The Falcons ended the game shooting 35-64 (.547) from the field. It is the second best shooting game for the Falcons this year. In a 75-51 win over UW-Eau Claire on Dec. 8 the Falcons were 31-56 (.554) from the field. UWRF was 9-15 (.600) from behind the arc and that's also the team's second best shooting percentage this season. In an 89-83 win over UW-La Crosse on jan. 12 UWRF was 7-10 (.700) from three-point range.
The Blue Devils, 7-10 overall and 2-8 in WIAC play, were led by Erik Olson who scored 19 points and Eric Hostetter who scored 13.
The Falcons, now 16-2 overall, will look to solidify its hold on first place in the WIAC when they host UW-Superior (11-7, 3-6 WIAC) on Wednesday at the Karges Center. Action starts at 7 p.m. UWRF is two games ahead of second place UW-Stevens Point in the WIAC standings.
