Voetlz leads charge with 23

No. 10 UW-River Falls kept its perfect conference record intact after a scare by the UW-Superior Yellowjackets, 62-59 at the Karges Center Wednesday night. Jake Voeltz (River Falls, River Falls HS) had 23 to lead the Falcons, inclduing 11 in the games final 10 minutes.

River Falls opened up a 10-point lead in the first half when Jontae Koonkaew (Apple Valley, MN, Apple Valley HS) burried a three just six minutes into the game.  It looked as if the nation's No. 10 team would roll, but the Yellowjackets had other ideas.  They charged ahead with a 15-2 run and then took a four point lead into the break.

Once, UWS took the lead with 6:45 to play in the opening session, it did not relinquish it for 22 mintues.  UWRF got four straight points from Voetlz with just over three minutes to play to take a lead they wouldn't give back.

With 20 seconds on the clock, UWS' Jake Smith missed the front end of a 1-1 that could have tied the game.  Ollie White (Mound, MN, Mound-Westonka HS) pulled down the rebound and was immediately fouled.  White went to the line and made 1-2 to put UWRF up three.

Superior's Marcus Helland had a clean look at three to tie the game, but it skipped off the rim preserving the Falcon three-point win.

After Voeltz's 23, two other Falcons finished in double figures.  Koonkaew ended with 15 and White tied a career-high with 12.

Helland and Dan Culy were the leading scorers for UWS with 14 a piece.

River Falls goes to 17-2 overall and 10-0 in conference play for the first time in the modern era. The Falcons will host UW-Oshkosh on Saturday, 4 p.m. tip.
