The Falcon men's basketball team kept its winning streak alive with an 86-71 win over UW-Stout in a WIAC game at the Karges Center on Wednesday night.
The 86 points is the second most scored by UWRF this year. In the team's second game of the year they scored 90 in a 90-69 win over Simpson College.
UWRF led, 42-33, at the half. The team's biggest lead was 14 points, 32-18, with 7:14 to play in the first 20 minutes. Anderson hit 1-2 free throws at that point to give the Falcons the advantage. The first half featured three ties before the Falcons took control for the rest of the half. After UWRF had the 14 point lead, Stout went on an 8-0 run to cut the spread to 32-26 with 5:23 to go. After the Falcons scored four points, Stout got to within five (36-31) with 2:37 to go. But the Falcons scored the last four points of the half on a lay up by
Shane Manor (Altoona, UW-Superior) and a jumper by
Jontae Koonkaew (Apple Valley, MN, Apple Valley HS). Manor scored 16 points in the first 20 minutes to lead the Falcons.
Stout closed to within two points, 49-47, with 14:34 to play in the game. Stout's Jay Higgins hit two free throws to get his team within two. But the Falcons went on a 15-4 run over the next three minutes to lead, 64-51 with 11:54 to go. Koonkaew hit a lay up to give the Falcons the 13 point advantage. The Blue Devils got as close as eight points three times after that, but that's as close as they could come to the Falcons. With 5:54 to go Stout made it a 77-69 game when Jerrord Buchholtz hit a three. But UWRF outscored Stout, 9-1, to win going away.
Manor led four Falcons who scored in double figures. He finished with 24 points and a team best nine rebounds.
Jake Voeltz (River Falls, River Falls HS) finished with 12 points and six rebounds. Koonkaew scored 11 points and led all players with seven assists and five steals. The five steals ties a career high.
Danny Johnson (Stillwater, MN, Stillwater HS) scored a season high 11 points.
UWS's Buchholtz led all scorers with 34 points. All of his points from the field came from behind the arc and he finished 9-12 from long distance. He was also 7-8 at the line. Eric Hostettler finished with 17 points. Stout stayed in the game shooting 14-28 from behind the arc.
UWRF has won eight straight games and is a perfect 5-0 in WIAC play. UWRF is now 12-2 overall and was ranked No. 15 in this week's D3hoops.com poll. UWS falls to 7-6 overall and 2-3 in WIAC play.
The Falcons will play at UW-Whitewater on Saturday with action starting at 4 p.m.
