Eryn Lansverk (White Bear Lake, MN, White Bear Lake) had the only goal and Janae Baron (Hermantown, MN, Hermantown) had an assist, but St. Benedict's two goals were enough to beat the Falcons on Wednesday night. The Falcons were looking to bounce back from their 1-0 loss to La Crosse last Saturday, but were unable to do so despite giving up just two goals.
The Falcons started the game out with three early corner kick chances from Alyssa Manor (Stillwater, MN, Stillwater). Manor's three kicks did not lead to Falcon goals, but they did keep the possession mostly in the hands of the Falcons for the opening 25 minutes of the game.
Despite the Falcons efforts to score one early, the Blazers would get on the scoreboard first, at 28:10, when Heather Beshears set up Colleen Bouchard who knocked the ball past Falcon goaltender Becca Kramer (St. Michael, MN, St. Michael-Albertville). The goal was Bouchard's first of the season and it put St. Benedict on top, 1-0, early.
The goal allowed the Blazers to take control as they would not allow the Falcons to get another shot on goal for the rest of the first half.
The second half started quick for St. Benedict as they got two corner kick chances and a shot on goal by Bouchard that was denied by Kramer.
Just five minutes later, at 58:37, the Blazers would score their second goal of the game. This time it was Bouchard who would set up Beshears and her shot sailed home to give St. Benedict a 2-0 advantage with just over 30 minutes to play.
The Blazers had chances to score another goal not long after, but Kramer was a brick wall in net for the rest of the game.
The Falcons, down two goals with just over five minute to play, found the back of the net at 84:37 when Baron fed Lansverk a beautiful breakaway pass. Lansverk received the pass and did what she does best by putting the ball passed Blazer goaltender Megan Favorite for her
The goal was not enough, however, as the Falcons couldn't find another before the half expired and lost for the second straight game, 2-1.
Anna Kouba (Lino Lakes, MN, Centennial) led the Falcons with three shots on goal. Lansverk had two and both Manor and Abbie Zastrow (Green Bay, WI, Bayport) each had one.
The Blazers outshot the Falcons, 6-3, in the first half and 7-4 in the second half for an overall advantage of 13-7.
Kramer recorded 11 saves for the game. Favorite had six saves.
St. Ben's had six corner kicks and the Falcons had four.
The Falcons fall to 6-11 overall for the season after the loss. The Blazers improve to 9-5-1 overall after the win.
The Falcons will now return home to Ramer Field on Saturday, Oct. 22nd to take on UW-Whitewater at 2 p.m.
