The No. 2 ranked Falcons rebounded from a 2-0 deficit to score five unanswered goals, extending their unbeaten streak to a school record 21 consecutive with a 5-2 win on the road Wednesday night in a non-conference match against St. Thomas.
The two Tommie goals both came off the advantage. After skating 5-on-3 for just under two minutes, the Tommies found the back of the net for the first at 9:35 and took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. The Falcons had the advantage twice after but failed to convert.
A penalty on Breanne Hrabe (New Prague, MN, New Prague HS) set up the third Tommie power play of the evening and the second one that they would yield a goal off. 7:47 into the frame the Tommies took a 2-0 lead. The Falcons responded with a pair of their own. Brook Story (Warroad, MN, Warroad HS) scored her ninth of the season off a Katie Flanagan (Roseville, MN, Roseville HS) helper at 10:45 to make it 2-1. Minutes later at 13:58, Jessica Thompson (Shoreview, MN, Mounds View HS) and Lauren Conrad (Lino Lakes, MN, Centennial HS) assisted Emma Nordness (Excelsior, MN, Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) on her sixth goal of the season.
The Falcons piled it on in the third period, scoring three goals. Flanagan's tenth goal of the season at 7:32 gave the Falcons proved to be the game winner, giving the Falcons a 3-2 lead. Ashly Berner (Plymouth, MN, Armstrong HS) tallied her fourth goal of the season that extended the dirty bird's lead to 4-2. Flanagan's third point of the game came off a Michelle Anez (Little Falls, MN, Alexandria HS) empty-netter at 19:26. Flanagan assisted Anez for her third point of the contest.
Between the pipes, Ashley Kuechle (Saskatoon, SASK, Battleford Sharks) picked up the win and is now 4-0-2 on the season. She stopped 17 of 19 shots faced.
The Falcons edged the Tommies 30 to 19 in total shots. The Falcons took the cake in penalties. They had six for 12 minutes while the Tommies' had four penalties for eight minutes in the box. The Tommies pinched in two of five advantages and the Falcons knocked in one of three.
With four games left, the Falcons are 18-0-3 and 13-0-3 in the NCHA. They lead the NCHA with 29 points, leading UW-Superior by four points and Adrian by five. Up next, the Falcons host Finlandia University for a two-game NCHA set. Puck drops at 3:05 pm on Saturday and noon on Sunday.
