The Falcon soccer team outplayed Hamline on Wednesday night at Ramer Field, but still came out with a 2-1 loss.
"For the second straight game we double our opponents in shots, but lost the game," said Falcon Coach
Sean McKuras. The Falcons had a 20-10 advantage in shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks against Hamline. In the team's 3-2 loss at St. Norbert on Sunday, UWRF had a 12-7 advantage in shots and a 9-0 advantage in corners."
After a scorless first half, Hamline took a 2-0 lead about 13 minutes into the second half. The first goal came in the 54th minute when Heather Hollinger scored off a header from a cross from Kelsey Carracolo. Just four minutes later Hollinger scored her second of the game with an assist to Jordan Sammons. Sammons took a free kick and Sammons was able to get to the ball and ram it home.
The Falcons were finally able to get on the scoreboard with three second to play. The Falcons were given a penalty kick after a foul in the box.
Cassie Stang (Stillwater, MN, Mahtomedi) took the shot and made no mistakes about it, beating the Piper goalie high to her right.
UWRF had the better part of the play in the game's first 10 minutes. For five minutes the teams played end to end before the Falcons once again dominated for 10 minutes. The Falcons nearly scored with about 2:30 to play in the first half off a
Alyssa Manor (Stillwater, MN, Stillwater) corner kick that caused a scramble in front of the HU goal.
Hamline put the pressure on the Falcons early in the second half to get the two goals. The Falcons held a 6-0 lead in the all-time series against Hamline.
Right after the first Piper goal,
Alex Swatloski (Green Bay, WI, East) broke in alone against the HU keeper, only to have her shot stopped.
"The key to the two losses has been for us not taking advantage of the opportunities we've created," said McKuras. "But, we are still a good team and we're not done yet."
UWRF goalie
Rachel Thompson (Cedar Falls, IA, Cedar Falls) made four saves. HU goalies Liz Stock (6) and Erin Urbanowicz (3) combined for nine saves. UWRF had a 12-6 advantage in shots in the first half and 8-4 in the second.
Carlin Bunting (Cottage Grove, MN, Hastings), Swatlowski and Manor each had four shots for the Falcons.
The Falcons will next play at Macalester on Saturday with action starting at 1 p.m.
