Women's Hockey Team Loses to Amherst

Lord Jeffs Win in Overtime, 2-1

The Falcon women's hockey team lost a 2-1 overtime game to Amherst College on Wednesday night at Hunt Arena.

Amherst's Tori Salmon scored the game-winner at 3:35 of the extra session. She was assisted by Emily Vitale and Erin Babineau. The goal came off a rebound to the left of the Falcon goal. It was Salmon's third goal of the season and helped her team to improve to 11-3 this year. The goal came with AC on a five-on-three power-play advantage.

The game featured two of the top teams in the country. Amherst entered the contest ranked No. 7 and UW-River Falls was ranked No. 8.

"I thought we played hard and I'm very happy with our effort," said Falcon Coach Joe Cranston after the game. "This game proved we can play with anyone. It's just too bad that the game had to end with a five-on-three power play."

The Falcons had their chance on the power play in the second half of the third period. Amherst took three straight minor penalties over the final 6:30 of the contest. But the Falcons were not able to take advantage of the situations. The Falcons took a penalty at 1:40 of the overtime and a second at 3:04 to give Amherst the five-on-three power play. The Lord Jeffs had a 6-1 advantage in shots in the extra session.

The Falcons took a 1-0 lead with just 1:36 to play in the first period when Katie Batters scored from just to the left of Amherst goalie, Sinead Murphy. Darion Bruyere started the play with a pass to Brook Story in the slot. Story's shot was stopped, but Batters banged home the rebound. It was her team best 10th goal of the season. The Falcons had a 14-10 advantage in shots in the first period. The Lord Jeffs had two power-play opportunities and the Falcons one.

Amherst tied the game with a goal at 12:17 of the second stanza. Megan Doyan scored the goal, her third of the year. She stepped out from behind the Falcon goal and beat UWRF goalie, Melissa Deardorff through the five-hole. Kaitlyn McInnis picked up the lone assist. The Lord Jeffs had a 9-6 advantage in shots during the period.

Deardorff stopped 27 of 29 shots while Murphy made 24 saves on 25 shots. UWRF was called for seven minor penalties and AC was called for eight. The Falcons finished 0-5 on the power play and Amherst was 1-4.

The Falcons, now 12-3-1 overall, will next host UW-Eau Claire on Friday at Hunt Arena with action starting at 7:05 p.m.
