The women's volleyball team earned a split on the final day of the Stout Invite. The Falcons fell to St. Ben's 3-0 and came back to sweep St. Catherine's. They finished the invite with a 2-2 record.
In the first match against St. Ben's the Falcons fell in a tough match, 25-27, 26-28 and 20-25.
St. Ben's was just able to out-hit the Falcons, which proved to be the difference in the game. St. Ben's had 47 kills compared to UWRF's 41.
UWRF was well-balanced on the offensive attack.
Erin Green (Fridley, MN, Fridley),
Brianna Muetzel (Oakdale, MN, Cretin-Derham Hall) and
Kaylee Jacobs (Glenwood, MN, Minnewaska) all had nine kills while
Danielle Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, MN, Cretin-Derham Hall) and
Jean Theis (Shakopee, MN, Shakopee) added six each.
The Falcons were also balanced defensively, getting 14 digs from
Courtney Preiner (Oakdale, MN, Hill-Murray) and 13 from
Mackenzie Suda (Ham Lake, MN, Blaine).
In the second match, the Falcons came back for the 3-0 sweep of St. Catherine's. Game scores were 25-13, 25-23 and 25-23.
Green led all players with 19 kills throughout the match. She was 19-33 for a .485 kill percentage. Theis and Jacobs added six apiece for a Falcon team that hit .228 compared St. Catherine's, who hit a mere .183. Suda helped the Falcon offense with 40 set assists.
Preiner paced the defense with 15 digs.
Abbey Schmidtman (Renville, MN, Renville County West) added 14.
With the split, the Falcons are now 19-7 on the season. They will return to action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at the Karges Center against UW-Eau Claire. The match is the annual Dig For the Cure match. Spectators are encouraged to wear pink in support of finding the cure for breast cancer.
