The UW-River Falls volleyball team fell 3-1 against UW-Eau Claire at the Karges Center Wednesday night. Game scores were 25-23, 19-25, 25-27, and 12-25.
It was the Falcons' last regular season home game, and Dig For the Cure match. The crowd of 178 donned the Karges Center in pink in support of breast cancer awareness.
The Falcons were able to take the first set, but couldn't stop the Blugold momentum, as they came back to take the next three sets.
Erin Green (Fridley, MN, Fridley) led the Falcons with 15 kills. She was the Falcons' best hitter, connecting on 15-27 for a .444 kill percentage. Brianna Muetzel (Oakdale, MN, Cretin-Derham Hall) added 10 kills for UWRF, who out-hit UWEC 45-42.
The Falcons were plagued by 11 service aces by the Blugolds. UWRF meanwhile, only managed two.
Otherwise, the teams were very even on defense. UWRF had 54 digs; UWEC had 57. Abbey Schmidtman (Renville, MN, Renville County West) led the Falcons with 12, followed by Courtney Preiner (Oakdale, MN, Hill-Murray) with 11.
The Falcons also out-blocked the Blugolds 8-4. Jean Theis (Shakopee, MN, Shakopee) led UWRF with three. Mackenzie Suda (Ham Lake, MN, Blaine) led all players with 40 set assists.
With the loss, the Falcons fall to 19-9 overall and 4-2 in the WIAC. They are also 7-2 at the Karges Center.
The Falcons will return to action when the travel to the UW-Whitewater Tournament on Oct. 19 and 20. The Falcons will play host school UW-Whitewater at 5 p.m. UWRF is 12-42 all-time against the Warhawks.
