Volleyball Wins Final Regular Season Contest Over Oshkosh

The Falcon volleyball team closed the regular season with a 3-1 victory over UW-Oshkosh on Saturday in Oshkosh.  Game scores were 25-21, 26-24, 20-25, and 25-21.

Brianna Muetzel (Oakdale, MN, Cretin-Derham Hall) led the Falcons with 14 kills, just one shy of her career-high, throughout the match for Falcon team that had a potent offense.  As a team, the Falcons out-hit the Titans 55-40. Erin Green (Fridley, MN, Fridley) added 13 kills and Kaylee Jacobs (Glenwood, MN, Minnewaska) 10 for the Falcons, who secured the fourth seed for the WIAC tournament, which will begin Oct. 30.  The Falcons will host the No. 5 seed, which happens to be Oshkosh at 7 p.m. at the Karges Center.

The Falcon defense was also spectacular, as they compiled 81 digs compared to UWO's 68.  Four Falcons had double-digit digs. Courtney Preiner (Oakdale, MN, Hill-Murray) led the way with 30, followed by Danielle Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, MN, Cretin-Derham Hall) with 13, Abbey Schmidtman (Renville, MN, Renville County West) with 11, and Mackenzie Suda (Ham Lake, MN, Blaine) with 10.  Suda also had 45 set assists.

The only area where the Titans were better was that they had 14 ace blocks compared to UWRF's five.

With the win, the Falcons finish the regular season with a 22-11 record and a 5-3 record in the WIAC.  UWO finished 19-17 and 3-5 in the WIAC.

The two teams will meet again for the first round of the WIAC play-offs at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at the Kages Center.
