Katie Batters and
Brook Story each had four points and
Crysta Lowell scored two goals as the Falcon women's hockey team completed the weekend sweep of Finlandia with an 8-2 victory on Saturday afternoon.
In the first period, the Falcons fell behind early on a goal from Finlandia's Elizaveta Monakhova at 3:58, but Finlandia's control on the game would not last long.
Lowell scored her third goal of the season at 14:28 to tie the game at 1-1. The goal was assisted by Batters and Story. Just 14 seconds later, at 14:42,
Kait Mason scored her 13th of the year to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead. Assists were credited to
Alyssa Jackson and
Heather Horgen. At 15:06,
Emma Nordness would wrap up the first period with an unassisted goal to give the Falcons a 3-1 lead at the first intermission.
The second period was dominated by the Falcons starting with a goal by
Katie Flanagan at 1:49 to extend the lead to 4-1. The goal was Flanagan's 11th of the year and it was assisted by
Alice Cranston and
Alyssa Black. Late in the second, at 18:04, Batters found Story who scored her seventh of the year to give the Falcons a 5-1 lead going into the third period.
In the middle of the third period, at 9:49, Mason scored her second goal of the game and 14th of the year to up the Falcon lead to 6-1. Batters would add a goal of her own, at 14:10, when she scored on the power play to extend the Falcon lead to 7-1. The goal was assisted by Story and
Kendal Evenson.
At 16:11, Finlandia's Robin Stockwell would score on the power play to make the score 7-2.
Crysta Lowell finished off the Falcon victory, at 18:54, her second of the game and fourth of the season to give the Falcons an 8-2 victory. Batters and Story added assists as each of them finished with four points.
Shelby Rasmussen stopped 14 shots to earn the win in goal for the Falcons.
The Falcons dominated the shot chart as they recorded 62 total shots on goal to Finlandia's 16 shots. Eleven different Falcon players recorded points and every Falcon player, except Rasmussen, recorded at least one shot on goal.
“We played pretty well today,” said Falcon Coach
Joe Cranston after the game, “It was good to see that we did not let up after winning the NCHA title on Friday.”
The Falcons improve to 19-3-2 on the season and 17-2-1 in the NCHA. Finlandia falls to 0-20-2 overall and 0-17-1 in the NCHA.
UWRF will play its final regular season game against the University of St. Thomas on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at Hunt Arena.
