Alice Cranston had one goal and three assists and Katie Flanagan had two goals and two assists as the Falcons scored a season high eight goals in a 8-3 win over Concordia on Friday night at Hunt Arena.
The Falcons got on the board early in the first period when Flanagan netted her first of the night at 4:37. She was assisted by Alyssa Black. Concordia answered at 9:54 when Emily Heckendorf scored the tie the game at 1-1.
The tie did not last long as Sam Greeley scored her first of the season at 11:38 in the first period to make it 2-1 UWRF. Cranston picked up the assist on the goal. Concordia would tie the game up at 2-2 when Maxine Blohowiak scored at 14:09.
The second period began with Concordia taking a 3-2 lead on a power play goal by Muriel McIntyre at 7:31.
Heather Horgen's power play goal at 13:36 in the second period tied the game at 3-3 and UWRF never looked back. Cranston netted her 11th of the year just over a minute later, at 14:41, to give the Falcons a 4-3 lead going into the third period.
Emma Nordness scored the first of four UWRF goals in the third period at 1:06. Flanagan netted her second goal of the game and eighth of the season at 2:20 and she also assisted on Kendal Evenson's first goal of the year at 7:02.
The final goal of the game was scored by Alyssa Black on the power play and it gave the Falcons an 8-3 win in the first game of the two game weekend series against Concordia.
"We played very well tonight," said Falcon Coach
Joe Cranston. "I thought we settled the game down and controlled the play. Our defensemen played well with three scoring goals."
Melissa Deardorff earned her tenth win of the season as she stopped 18 through two and a half periods. Shelby Rasmussen put up a scoreless 10:05 in the third period with four saves.
UWRF outshot Concordia in every period and outshot them 38-25 overall.
Both teams combined for a total of 15 penalties in the game with 10 of those coming in the third period.
"It was nice to open the floodgates and score eight goals, and we had a couple of power-play goals too. When the special teams play well that helps a lot."
"We'll look at putting together the same type of game tomorrow. We'll put on an aggressive forecheck and hopefully score a bunch of goals again."
The Falcons improve to 16-3-2 on the season and 14-2-1 in the NCHA. Concordia falls to 7-10-2 overall and 5-8-1 in the NCHA. UWRF now has 29 points and an eight-point lead over second place UW-Superior.
The second game of the two game weekend series will be played on Saturday, Feb. 4th at 2:05 p.m. at Hunt Arena.
