Volleyball Wins Two Thrillers on Final Day of UWRF Invitational

Green named to all-tournament team

The women's volleyball team came away with two thrilling wins to finish play at their own invitational at the Karges Center.  They beat Waldorf and St. Scholastica in matches that went to five sets.

In the first match of the day the Falcons defeated Waldorf 3-2.  Game scores were 25-23, 23-25, 22-25, 25-11 and 15-13.

Erin Green (Fridley, MN, Fridley) led the Falcons with 20 kills throughout the match.  She was 20 for 38 for a .447 kill percentage.  She also led the Falcons with five ace blocks.  As a team, the Falcons had 14 while holding Waldorf to 10.

Jean Theis (Shakopee, MN, Shakopee) and Brianna Muetzel (Oakdale, MN, Cretin-Derham Hall) added 13 kills apiece for the balanced Falcon offense. Kaylee Jacobs (Glenwood, MN, Minnewaska) had a career-high eight kills in the match. Mackenzie Suda (Ham Lake, MN, Blaine) had 53 set assists to help the potent offense.

The Falcon defense was also stellar.  Courtney Preiner (Oakdale, MN, Hill-Murray) had a season's best 29 digs to lead UWRF.  Danielle Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, MN, Cretin-Derham Hall) also had a season's best with 21 digs in the winning effort.  The Falcons had 86 digs throughout the match.

The final match of the day was also a thriller in which the Falcons prevailed in five games.  UWRF defeated St. Scholastica 3-2 with game scores of 25-22, 25-16, 19-25, 18-25 and 15-11.

Green remained hot with a season's best 25 kills.   Green would be named to the all-tournament team after posting 19, 15, 20 and 25 kills throughout the four matches of the tournament.  That was a two-day total of 79 kills.

Two other Falcons also had double-digit kills in the match.  Theis added 15 and Muetzel 12 to help UWRF earn their eleventh win of the season.  The Falcons are now 11-2 overall.

Preiner again led the defense with 21 digs and Suda led UWRF with 47 set assists.

The Falcons will return to action for their WIAC opener against UW-La Crosse.  The match is set to get underway at 7 p.m. at the Karges Center.  UWRF is 26-35 all-time against the Eagles.
