The women's volleyball team opened the St. Norbert Tournament with a pair of loses. The Falcons lost to host school St. Norbert, 3-0, and then fell, 3-2, in a tough match against WIAC foe UW-Eau Claire.
Against St. Norbert, the games scores were 28-26, 25-23 and 25-14. The Falcons played a strong game, receiving 18 kills from
Erin Green (Fridley, MN, Fridley) and 10 from
Danielle Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, MN, Cretin-Derham Hall). As a team, the Falcons out-hit SNC with 41 kills, compared to SNC's 34. However, SNC had a better kill percentage, and that made the difference in the close contest. SNC hit .205 compared to UWRF's .099. UWRF had 27 attacking errors, while SNC had 11.
Courtney Preiner (Oakdale, MN, Hill-Murray) led all players with 24 digs.
Mackenzie Suda (Ham Lake, MN, Blaine) added 12 digs to go along with her match-high 37 assists.
With the win, SNC improved to 11-6 on the season.
The second match of the day saw the Falcons battle it out with conference foe UWEC. The Falcons took the first set 25-19, but UWEC came back to win the second 25-14. The Falcons would take the next set 25-18, but the Blugolds would take the next two, 25-18 and 15-10 to close out the match.
Kaylee Jacobs (Glenwood, MN, Minnewaska) had a career-high 12 kills for the Falcons. Those 12 kills also led the Falcon offense. But the Falcons were again plagued by attacking errors, this time hitting .186.
Brianna Muetzel (Oakdale, MN, Cretin-Derham Hall) led the Falcons' defense also with a career-high, as she came up with 23 digs throughout the match.
Preiner had 21 digs for the Falcons. She is now 27 digs away from being UWRF's all-time leading digger.
The Falcons are now 13-3 on the season.
The Falcons will continue play tomorrow at the St. Norbert Tournament. They will take on Carthage College at 10 a.m. followed by Finlandia at noon.
