Kait Mason scored twice to help lead the Falcon women's hockey team to a 5-2 win over St. Scholastica on Saturday afternoon at Hunt Arena.
UWRF scored twice in the first and second periods to win its ninth straight game. UWRF is now 8-2-1 at Hunt Arena. The Falcons remain in first place in the NCHA with 30 points.
The Falcons had a 2-1 lead after the first 20 minutes of play, a period that had the Falcons hold a 22-7 advantage in shots on goal. Mason scored at 8:23 after a scramble in front of the CSS net. It was her 13th goal of the year and
Alice Cranston picked up the lone assist on the power-play goal. CSS tied the game just 36 seconds later when Itsuki Baba scored a power-play goal. She beat Falcon goalie,
Ashley Kuechle with a one-timer from the right face off circle. The Falcons took the lead with just 34 seconds to play in the period when
Amanda Ryder scored off a wrist from from the top of the left circle. It was her seventh goal of the year and was unassisted. The Falcons took two minor penalties, and CSS one, in the period.
The Falcons held a 4-1 lead after two periods scoring twice. Mason netted her second of the game, and 14th of the year, at 13:17. She took a long pass from Ryder off a faceoff in the Falcon defensive zone and scored on the semi breakaway. Cranston also picked up an assist.
Chloe Kinsel scored at 14:43 of the period to put the Falcons ahead, 4-1. She scored with a wrist shot, that beat the goalie on the blocker side, from the left face off dot.
Kendal Evenson and
Crysta Lowell picked up the assists on the goal. It was Kinsel's 16th goal of the year. The Falcons had a 17-5 advantage in shots in the period and both teams took a single minor penalty.
In the third both teams scored a goal.
Alyssa Jackson scored a power-play goal at 5:08 to put UWRF ahead, 5-1. It was her eighth goal of the season and she was assisted by
Dani Buehrer and
Allie Olson. CSS scored what proved to be the final goal of the game at 16:46 when Nina Waidacher scored. CSS had an 11-9 advantage in shots in the period - partly thanks to two Saint power plays.
For the game the Falcons outshot CSS, 48-23. UWRF was 2-3 on the power play and CSS was 2-5. The Falcons took five minor penalties and the Saints three.
The Falcons, now 16-4-2 overall and 14-2-2 in the NCHA, will next play at St. Thomas on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
