Women's Hockey Falls in O'Brien Cup Finals to St. Norbert, 3-2

The #6 UW-River Falls Falcons fell to the #9 St. Norbert Green Knights 3-2 in overtime tonight at Hunt Arena in the O'Brien Cup Championship game.

The first period of play was scoreless as both teams battled even. UWRF attempted nine shots on goal and SNC attempted six total shots on net.

The second period was all UWRF. Crysta Lowell scored her eleventh goal of the season at 5:19 off the Chloe Kinsel and Alyssa Jackson assists. Kinsel and Jackson each earned their eleventh assist of the season on the play. At 9:23 Leah Gefroh scored an unassisted goal to give the Falcons a two goal lead.

Ashley Kuechle recorded 25 saves in the game not allowing a goal in the first two periods.

In the third period SNC played strong defense only giving up five Falcon shots on goal. Down by two goals SNC pulled goalie Kaley Gibson and Stephanie Sindle scored goal at 18:39 of the third period. With just eleven seconds to go in the game SNC got another extra skater goal when Henriette Ostergaard went top shelf to tie the game.

The Falcons attempted seven shots on goal in the overtime period but could get one past Gibson who finished the game with 31 saves while not allowing a goal in the third period or overtime play.

Karissa Anderson attempted all three of the Green Knights overtime shots on goal and scored the game winner at 12:38 of the overtime period.

SNC moves to 18-9-2 and after winning the O'Brien Cup will have an automatic bid into the national tournament.

UWRF falls to 21-6-2 and will need to receive an at large bid into the national tournament for their season to continue. The NCAA selection show is scheduled for Monday, March 4 at 9 a.m.
