It was the Pancreatic Cancer Awareness game in River Falls on Saturday evening as the UW-River Falls Falcons defeated the UW–Platteville Pioneers by a score of 3-1.
The Falcons dressed in purple for the awareness game and came out firing in the first half of the match, scoring three times before the intermission.
Just past three minutes into the game, Missy Barnett put in her second goal of the year off a header with an assist from Kenzie Weisman. Just 10 minutes later, Carrie Anderson scored the second goal of the game for the Falcons with an assist from Alex Swatloski.
Anderson would follow up her goal with a helper at the 29 minute mark when she was credited with an assist after Megan Haninger hit the back of the net for the first time of the season and of her young collegiate career.
The Falcons led the Pioneers 3-0 at the break. The Pioneers tried to break new ground, but could only beat the Falcons' keeper once in the second half.
Six minutes into the second half, Bianca Mahoney netted her third goal of the season with an assist from Julie Divita.
UWRF peppered the goal on both sides of the half with 12 shots before the half and seven after. The Pioneers switched goalies at the half with Katie Rush shutting out her half of the contest.
The Falcons' goalkeepers played a stout game only allowing the one goal while making three saves. Erica Cimochowski was in the net for three quarters of the game with Sarah Baierl coming in relief for the last 15 minutes.
The win brings the Falcons to a 9-4-2 record overall this season with a 2-2-1 WIAC record. The Pioneers are now 6-8 overall and 1-4 in the WIAC.
The Falcons next game is Wednesday in River Falls in a nonconference battle against St. Olaf. The game kicks off at 7 p.m.
